Everyone hopes that they will not need emergency roof repair, but at times it is totally necessary. What do you do when a branch or storm makes a hole in your roof and the water is pouring in? Well, take a look at this short but informative article and find out what you will need to do should you need.
The wind is howling, the trees are swaying and you just had an major problem happen to your roof. Something has damaged it in a big way and you have to do something now. You will need some tools. Hammers, tin snips, nails, staple guns, plastic sheeting and the like are normal things to go and get down at the local store. Once you get some supplies and are ready, the work can begin.
The first step to emergency roof repair is cut out a piece of sheet metal or flashing six inches larger than the area you are repairing. Since you probably have a shingled roof, slip this under the shingles above the area that needs work. Use a temporary piece of wood and hammer a nail through it and through the sheet metal or flashing and attach everything to the roof at one time. Next, you will probably want to use something else over this sheet metal and wood repair. It will be time for the sheet plastic. Get some more wood pieces and nail these wood pieces over the sheet metal but as a larger patch. If the damage is close enough to the pinnacle of your roof, run the plastic over the top and to the other side, hammering the wood strips along the outside edges as you go.
If you do not have enough wood for your work, you can use staples to tack the sheet metal and the sheet plastic over the damaged area. Whichever you do, you will want to make sure it is tight against the roof. If it blows off in another storm before you have the chance to repair it permanently, it could very well injure someone. The wind is a strong force and you will want to make sure everything issecure and safe on the roof.
Some tips to help during yourroof repair is to use a tool belt to prevent you from having to make so many trips down the roof and the ladder. It is safer. If you are going up there in a storm, use shoes that will not slip. Storms like hurricanes can wreak havoc and being ready is the smart way to make a repair less of an event for everyone involved.
