There are three commonly accepted ways of preparing rough estimates, each practical in its appropriate connection and each requiring its own suitable set of data. Perhaps the most habitually used method is that of calculating the cubic contents of the structure and pricing it at a certain amount per foot cube, depending on the kind of construction.

Experience will enable moderately precise estimates to be quickly achieved by this method. The data required is the charge per foot cube of various classes of buildings of recent production; but to be of genuine value these prices should be gathered by the estimator from structures which he himself has carried out.

It is a good practice to determine at the completion of each job what the cost per foot cube has actually been and to keep detailed lists. In the case of building differing materially from one that has been built previously, it will be readily clear how difficult it is to evaluate with precision the amount by which such disparity will affect the price per foot cube. When estimating cubic contents for a large building, it is better to subdivide the building into two or more classes and to price each at its own specific rate.

For instance, the primary block of a structure may be of a much more expensive quality than the remaining portion; in this kind of scenario it will be more accurate to price them as separate structures than to attempt any kind of averaging which can only be a slight improvement over a rough guess. In some cases it may be easiest to keep the basement and the superstructure divided.

Where this technique of estimating is implemented, it is customary to let the price include only the building by itself and to put in separate approximations for drainage, heating, etc., which clearly cannot be accurately allotted at per foot cube of building. Fence-walls, yard-paving, and the like should, for an analogous reason, figure separate estimates.

The standard way of determining the cubic contents of a building for estimating reasons is to multiply the area on plan by the height from the top of the concrete foundations to halfway up the roof or three-quarters up if there are attics. Dormers, corner blocks, and other projecting elements must also be accounted for.

Another technique assumed in the case of churches and schools is to allow a certain amount per head of seating room. Similarly, the unit of cost in the event of hospitals or stables is for each bed or stall.

This is often a helpful guide where one has exactly like buildings already carried out for contrast; but it is essential that the ratio among the seating accommodation, or bed, and the cubic contents be similar in both cases. Any extra height given to the structure, or an added vestry, plinth blocks, or anything out of the ordinary, will involve additional expense which has to be dispersed over the total.

My grandfather built his home when my father was nine years old and lived in it until he died. As a Carpenter and general contractor, I have always wanted to build my own home but never got the chance.

For anyone interested in building the home of your dreams, I found a few books on home building that seemed to be pretty helpful. I have been remodeling, building room additions, worked on track house framing for years and have done more home repairs than you could possibly imagine. I have found some of these books to be very resourceful and helpful, when it comes to solving some of the problems I run into.

When it comes to building the foundation, it's not just about pouring a concrete slab or footings. You need to run electrical conduit, plumbing supply and waste pipes, make sure the building foundation is square and level, and if you forget one thing, just one thing, you could find yourself in a world of hurt. I have worked on homes where the builder forgot to install electrical conduit and plumbing for a kitchen island. The contractor needed to saw cut the foundation and repair at it, during the home construction. This cost the building contractor around $4600.

Frozen Pipes - Home Advice For Repairs

First, it's important to know which pipes are frozen. If your water will not drain, this means your drain pipes are frozen. If no water comes out of the faucet, this means that your supply line pipes are frozen.

DRAIN PIPES:

What to do: If your sinks, toilets, showers or tubs will not drain, this means that your drain pipes could be frozen. If your drain pipe is frozen, open cabinet doors or cut into your walls or ceilings to allow the heat from your home to get to the pipes. To heat your pipes faster, a hair dryer is a great way to warm them up. Please use the hair dryer with care - if water starts leaking out, the hair dryer can short circuit.

Why it happens: Many times pipes freeze due to finishing off a basement. When the basement was unfinished, the pipes were exposed to the heat of the home. Once the basement is finished, the sheetrock and insulation blocks off the pipes from getting heat from the home. If the pipes freeze, the could cause damage to newly finished basements.

How to prevent it: A simple precaution for preventing frozen drain pipes can be as easy as cutting a 6x9 return air grate in the area to allow warmth into the joyced cavity. Always remember to insulate your pipes from the cold, but not from the heat in the house.

What to do: If your water will not come out of the faucet or shower head, this means that your supply line could be frozen. Your pipes could be burst, so first you must shut your water off at the main. You will want to get heat to your pipes. The best way to heat them is to open cabinets and doors, cut holes in the walls and use fans or hair dryers to warm them up. Again, please use care when working with the hair dryer, if it gets wet, the hair dryer can short circuit. Warming the pipes is important, and the extent of the damage cannot be determined until they are mostly thawed.

Why it happens: Many times pipes freeze due to recently finishing off a basement or a change in insulation. The pipes in your home need to be insulated only from the cold on the outside, but not from the heat on the inside. If your pipes are insulated from the heat inside your home, they have no way of staying warm.

What do do after the pipes are thawed: If after the pipes are thawed, there are non leaks, many times full operation is returned. Sometimes scale and sediment move through the lines because of the glacial-like action of ice, which pushes sediment into blocked pipes. Because of this, ariators and shower heads may need to removed and cleaned for them to work completely.

If a leak develops because of burst pipes from ice, turn the water off again, and call a plumber. It is helpful to know exact location or even cut open walls to identify the exact location of a split pipe.

How to prevent it: If you are worried your supply lines are going to freeze because of past history or evidence to support that, some plumbers may recommend letting run to keep the water flowing - similar to a water tower. Please do not do this! This can be just as dangerous. The water usually cannot go down the pipes fast enough and it can develop layers of ice and plug the pipe, causing an unattended running faucet to overflow the sink. Another way to prevent a freeze is to take care of those leaky faucets. The dripping into the drain can cause an ice buildup and eventually cause a frozen pipe.

There never seems to be enough storage in a kitchen. There are ways to add extra storage. I easiest way is to add an additional piece of furniture. We all do not have room or the money to purchase a piece of furniture. Lets get creative.

Making a storage unit for plates and saucers can be simple. It only has to be a 1/4 on the outer edges. Then you can place dowels or 1x1 boards about every 8" apart and 1/2 for the dishes to sit, attach them. Once it is painted the color of the kitchen you can place the dishes into the unit. This will show off your beautiful dishes and give you more space in the cupboard for things you don't want to look at.

Another way is to place shelves beside a window or in between cabinets. Any empty space in the kitchen that you can fit a shelf. You can then place cups, bowls, vases, or baskets to fill. These spaces can be painted to match or accent the kitchen. It makes it so much fun to all little things to change the kitchen.

If you have shelves or cabinets that do not have doors, you can place baskets, metal cans, painted boxes, or any things that is pretty full of stuff in this space. Being able to find space for stuff like jello boxes, bags of pasta, or any things that does not have a suitable size is great for these. 'Tis the season for slips and falls! Icy sidewalks, snowy paths..... and inside the house?

Here is a check list of safety precautions for the older members of the family. If your frail elderly mother is moving in with you, or Grandad is coming to stay it is a good idea to go through the house and check for hazards and add a few safety features before they come.

Front path and steps

• Make sure that the paths to the house are even, no major cracks, roots or rocks.
• Keep steps and paths clear of snow and ice.
• Check the stairs - no holes or uneven concrete.
• Hand rails, both sides if possible.
• Path and front entrance well lit. Movement-detector lights work well.

Entrance, Hallways and Stairs

• Declutter - make sure that shoes are put away and outdoor clothes hung up. If there are children, teach them to put their toys away.
• Lighting - halls and stairs should be well lit. A night light in the hall between bedroom and bathroom is vital.
• Take up any loose mats that could be a tripping hazard.
• Check that stair rails are secure.

Bedrooms

• No loose mats or rugs
• Make room around the bed, especially if your elderly Mom or Dad uses a walker.
• Have an easy to reach lamp by the bed. If it is awkward to reach the lamp, a sound activated ("clap-on - clap-off") lamp will help.
• A phone beside the bed.
• For folks stiff with arthritis or others who may feel light-headed when they first stand up, a bed assist handle is a great help in preventing falls.
• Again, keep the area around the bed as clutter-free as possible.

Bathroom

• Where possible install wall bars at the end (tap end) of the bathtub and one on the far wall. A wall bar beside the toilet may also help.
• Some all in one piece, preformed tub surrounds should not have wall bars added. Clamp-on tub grips, or a floor-to-ceiling pole next to the tub can be used.
• Use non-slip mats in the tub or shower.
• A tub or shower stool is useful for those with poor balance.
• Any medications should be clearly marked. A dosette or blister pack will make it easy to keep track that the medications are taken as prescribed.

Living Room

• Remove loose rugs and mats
• Make sure that there is room for a walker if one is used - coffee tables often have to be moved out of the way.
• Avoid rocking/swivelling chairs
• Loose electrical cords are a tripping hazard. Route them away from traffic areas where possible, or use duct tape to fix them to the floor.
• A portable telephone is safer than a fixed phone. Many falls occur when people are rushing to answer the phone. Keep the handset nearby at all times, putting it back in its charger beside the bed overnight.
• Have good lighting, easy to reach switches.

Kitchen

• Make sure that essential utensils are easy to reach
• Use a sturdy step stool to reach higher cupboards
• Have a smoke alarm and be sure to check the batteries regularly
• If your older person has fairly severe memory loss, it may be necessary to limit their cooking or even unplug the stove.
• See that any spills are quickly wiped up.

This may all seem quite overwhelming, but most homes need only a few adjustments. After all, some simple precautions could save a broken hip or worse.

Handling the Money Issue

Okay. You found a contractor or service provider that you like. You received an estimate to your satisfaction, you understand the terms of an agreement (i.e. down payment, time to complete, materials to be used, etc.) and have decided to move forward.

First understand that an estimate, by definition, is just that. An estimate is a rough idea to produce a statement of the approximate cost of the project. It is not a promise. Also understand the estimate is for the time it should take to complete the project understanding that if something gets in the way of that completion, oftentimes it will, that a satisfactory resolution to the completion will be set in place immediately upon discovery.

Contact the service pro and let him/her know that you are ready to take the next step and enter into a formalized agreement (contract). At this time, the service pro will set up a time to meet with you to discuss in detail every aspect of the project possible, i.e. materials to be used, color selection, setting a final cost and setting the start and end times. Be realistic about the time it will take to complete the project. This will mostly be determined based the professional experience and labor personnel.

Regarding down payments. We all have our own horror stories and have heard stories from others. However, it is not ethical to make the professional buy all your materials with no money down from you. This is where trust comes into play. If you are not comfortable making a materials down payment, ask to pay the supplier directly. Be advised that if you wish to purchase the materials directly, you most likely will end up paying the full price rather than a discount offered to the service pro if he/she chooses to share that with you. Ask for it.

The best way to handle payments, in my opinion, depending on the size and scope of the project, is to break down the project into segments. Say the job is for a painting project that will take you one week to complete. Half down payment and half due at completion should suffice. If you are not comfortable with paying half, then reason with the pro. They want your business, but you want their trust. In the event that 99% of the work is done, but something else needs to be completed but cannot at that time for one reason or another, agree on a partial payment of the remaining balance due. This keeps honesty in place and you are not looking for someone else to finish the job if the service pro does not finish. This rarely occurs, but it is good to keep everything in fair balance.

Building and contents insurance are a way of protecting the shell of your home and your contents inside against disaster and loss. If you take out the protection together you can often get savings compared to taking each policy individually with different providers. In search engine optimization, "off page" factors have become more and more important as they relate to rankings. In particular, solid link popularity can literally make or break a site with the search engines.

Before we go any further, what is "link popularity"? In very simplistic terms, link popularity refers to the number and quality of the incoming links that are pointing to your site. These other sites consider your site important enough to link to. So, in the engine's view, your site is considered important as well. What is meant by "link popularity" can get much more complex, which is discussed further in this article.

However, one of the most difficult areas of SEO is building link popularity. Why? Because the engines don't want "artificially created" (or useless) links, so there are no easy ways to build link popularity. The days of link farms and huge link exchange programs are over. Try those strategies now and you can easily find yourself booted out of an engine.

Rather, the engines want links from authoritative sites, or links from sites that share the same focus as your site.

Take the time to look over their site and then suggest where a link to you might be appropriate. Most importantly, personalize your e-mails! You must distinguish yourself from all the spam they receive daily. I was listening to something interesting the other day when someone mentioned putting God on trial for some of the atrocities in the world. If God is the creator of the universe and all that is, or all that ever will be, how can we put him on trial, he's our creator. We can't put our spiritual master on trial can we, he'll just escape anyway if we convict him, won't he. He's got to be smart enough to break out a prison.

As a child I often thought about God and why he would allow such suffering throughout the world. It never made sense to me when I was child and it still doesn't make sense to me today. Why would the creator, want us to suffer, with even the littlest of problems. Other religions have explained it as if God was teaching us a lesson and that's why we have hardships in our lives.

Do you think God ever went through these hardships? Did God have problems finding a job or gathering some food? Does God even eat? Okay now I'm getting off the topic here,(I wonder what God does eat)... if children do something wrong, most of the time their parents will discipline or correct them. If adults to things wrong, the government will discipline and reprimand them. Sometimes these punishments can be severe. It depends on the crimes committed.

If man has to be put on trial for committing crimes like murder, genocide, and general atrocities towards mankind, should God also be put on trial or is he above man because he's God. I can't imagine the creator of the universe ever being put on trial for man's crimes against humanity or other men, but it seems like someone who is all powerful and all knowing could help his children out of this little mess that we're in today.

Couldn't God help us like we help our children. We as parents might not have all the answers, but we do not claim to have them. We are not all powerful and all knowing, like we would assume God to be. When is God going to help us solve some of our major world problems, like genocide and starvation.

Putting God on trial might not solve all of our problems today but it would be nice to have some help with our problems. If he created us to please him, do we have to go on trial one day, for all the things we did or ignored while we were alive. Something to think about isn't it.

How to Revamp and Redecorate Your Bathroom

Brightening up your bathroom needn't be a time consuming or expensive business - with a little imagination and effort you can spruce up the most lackluster of rooms.

If the room leaves a lot to be desired, work according to short- and long-term aims. You will then have the immediate satisfaction of seeing some quick improvements - towels in fresh colors, for instance, or a new bath screen or shower curtain - while you wait for other longer term jobs to be finished, such as a new tiled border or built-in bathroom cabinet.

Practicalities

Deal with anything that's even remotely dangerous first: put a non-slip finish on the bathtub base, and provide a mat for ceramic floor tiles that get slippery when wet; install a childproof medicine cabinet if necessary; and if there's room, install a grab rail by the bath.

Once the safety work is completed you can set to work on the irritating inefficiencies: replace the waterproof seal around the bath or basin; stop drips and dribbles by replacing washers or faucets and installing a new shower hose, and consider installing an exhaust fan if condensation is a serious problem. In a small room, rehanging a door with hinges on the other side may make better use of space.

With the room in working order, you can set about improving the style and adding color.

Walls

Tiles are the most practical of finishes for bathroom walls, but what if they're in an uninspiring design or color you no longer like? With tiles that are in poor condition, either remove them completely, or cover them with some form of paneling - wooden tongue-and-groove panels for example.

There are two ways to tackle tiles that are sound but unattractive: remove them and put up new tiles, or - much quicker and often just as satisfactory - simply tile over them. A third option, not normally recommended for an area subject to damp but worth considering as a short-term cover-up, is to cover the offending tiled surface with a tile paint. This solves the problem if you are planning a complete overhaul but have other priorities to see to first.

If the tiles are merely dull rather than an eyesore, make them more interesting by adding a tiled border to the existing tiles or, for a low cost facelift, experiment with tile transfers.

If you prefer wallpaper, choose a waterproof vinyl, which copes well with condensation and damp zones. Alternatively, paint is a quick way of freshening up walls - look for a type that's specifically made for bathrooms.

Floors

Carpet tiles are easy to lay and comfortable underfoot - choose a type suitable for the damp conditions in a bathroom. Also worth considering are well-sealed, floor-quality cork tiles and vinyl sheet flooring or tiles.
