Smoke Damage - Home Repair Advice

Smoke, a harmful mixture of chemicals and toxins, is dangerous to your health and your property, and adds to the damage done to your property as the result of a fire.

Inhaling smoke is very damaging to your health, which is why fire departments help vent smoke from buildings.

Once the fire department has put out the fire and vented the building, their job is complete, and there is often a large mess left behind, including discoloration and corrosion of materials as well as pungent odors that may be difficult to eliminate from your home and belongings.

At this point, smoke restoration companies should be called for professional help. This clean-up job requires special tools and knowledge to prevent further damage and to restore the property.

The extent of smoke damage and the ease with which it is cleaned away is often based on the type of smoke in your home: wet, dry, protein and fuel-oil.

Wet smoke comes from low heat and is difficult to clean. Dry smoke results after a fast burning fire at high temperatures. Protein smoke is invisible, but discolors varnishes and has an extremely foul odor. Fuel-oil soot smoke is a result of a furnace malfunction.

Before the restoration professionals arrive, there are several things you can do to start the smoke removal process. Immediate action is important since many items in your home can be damaged by smoke, including electronics, clothing, upholstery and draperies.

First, open windows and turn on fans, if possible, to air out the home and begin to eliminate the remaining odor. This can also help dry out your carpets and other upholstered items that may have been water damaged by extinguishing the fire.

These tips will speed up the restoration process, too:

Do

  • Brush off or vacuum loose soot particles from upholstery, drapes and carpets.
  • Discard open food packages.
  • Take clothing to a laundry specializing in smoke damage restoration.
  • Wipe residue from kitchen and bathroom fixtures.
  • Relocate pets to a clean environment.

Don't

  • Attempt to wash walls or paintings because improper techniques could do more damage.
  • Use electrical appliances until cleared to do so by the restoration professionals.
  • Use ceiling fans because they could short circuit if the ceiling is wet.

Common Contractor Shortcuts That Cost You More Than Just Migraines

When you hire a contractor, you want to know that you're going to get the job done and that it's going to be done right. If not, you would never invest the money in the project, right? Unfortunately, some contractors don't look at things this way. They are ready to cut corners in any way they can so that they have to do less work and still receive your money. They don't care if it costs you more money in the long run or more heartache. All they care about is themselves. The goal of this article is to inform you of these common contractor shortcuts which will end up costing you more than just migraines.

Scams

One of the things you need to watch out for is contractor scams. You may be approached by a contractor who claims to have just enough asphalt left over to pave your driveway from another job and offer to repave it for an extremely low price. Of course, this looks like a great deal to you so you go ahead and pay the money. Unfortunately, either the contractor disappears with the money and you have no brand new repaved driveway or they do repave it, but they do a terrible job. By the time you figure out that something is wrong, they are long gone. Never trust someone who approaches you and offers to pave your driveway. Call contractors on your own and make sure the company is legitimate.

Overcharging

Another thing you may encounter is contractors who overcharge to repave your driveway. There are many different materials which go into paving your driveway, like the stone and the asphalt. There are also different grades of stone and asphalt. You could end up paying for the highest grade and getting the lowest grade. Take your contractor through each step of the paving process and find out exactly what materials you're getting and what you are paying for them. If you are suspicious of a company, call another company and compare the materials with the price of the job. This comparison should help you determine what is standard and what is not.

Down Payments

Another thing you may want to watch out for is a company that requires a down payment. They may tell you they need your down payment to take care of the materials. It should make you wonder what sort of company can't purchase the materials without you pre-paying. Make sure you get a free estimate before the contractor begins the work too. The price they estimate should be very, very close to the actual price you pay. Small overages may be understandable but if you're asked to pay a completely different price, things are not right.

By watching out for common shortcuts that contractors take, you can avoid paying more money than you should have, getting swindled or taken advantage of and receiving poorly done work.

The only company which does not charge a down payment in the greater Toronto area is Ludwig Paving (http://www.LudwigPaving.com).

Ludwig Paving is a full service paving and asphalt company. Handling all of your paving needs, from driveways, parking lots, and maintenance, they are Toronto's most trusted asphalt company. Having been in business for more than 25 years, they are the top choice for any kind of paving. For more information, visit http://www.LudwigPaving.com today.

Contemplating a Basement Ceiling - Consider the Industrial Look

When it comes to basement ceilings, we normally think of two alternatives, drywall or dropped ceiling tiles. However there is another alternative. The industrial look is also an alternative for basement ceilings. The industrial look basement ceiling involves simply painting the ceiling as is, floor joists, first floor subfloor, pipes, ductwork, wiring included.

The Industrial look is ideal for the basement ceiling situation where there is limited ceiling height and budget to add either a dropped ceiling or drywall basement ceiling.

The industrial ceiling look is regularly used in the reclamation of older industrial buildings. Frequently you will find upscale restaurants and office space in these reclaimed buildings with industrial ceilings.

If you want to consider an industrial look ceiling, check first with a building inspector or home inspector to see what can be painted and what can not. In some cases, some utilities (e.g. heated duct work) may not be able to be painted.

Once you know what can and can not be painted, simply give the as-is basement ceiling a good cleaning, being careful to remove all of the dust. It is important that anything that is to be painted should be free of dust; else the paint will not stick.

Once the as-is ceiling is clean, spray on a primer, followed by one or two coats of finished paint. Lighter colors will give the room a brighter look and the perception that the ceiling height is higher than it really is.

An Industrial Look basement ceiling is a great alternative to traditional basement ceiling choices and is the most affordable to install. Before deciding on your ceiling consider the Industrial Look.

Installing Beadboard Panels

Beadboard is great for heavily used areas in the home. Beadboard is ideal for walls in kitchens, bathrooms and hallways or anywhere where there is a high likelihood of the walls to be regularly scuffed or scratched. Typically it is fastened to the lower half of walls and is topped off with a piece of cap rail.

Contrary to installing strips, installing beadboard panels is relatively an easy project for the do-it-yourself homeowner. Beadboard panels come in 4'x8' sheets that have been manufactured to look exactly like a series of tongue and grooved beadboard strips fastened together. They are relatively lightweight and can be cut using a table saw.

Tools Required:

  • Table Saw or Circular Saw
  • Miter Saw
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Hammer
  • Screw Driver
  • Tape Measure
  • Safety Glasses
  • Paint Brush

Materials Required

  • Nails
  • Beadboard panels
  • Cap Rail
  • Baseboard Trim
  • Corner Molding
  • Vapor Barrier
  • Paint / Polyurethane

Before installing panels in a room it is best to allow the boards to sit in the room for 2 or 3 days. This allows the panels to stabilize relative to the temperature and humidity of the room.

Installation starts with removing any baseboard trim that may be on the wall. Also remove outlet and switch covers that are located in the area where the beadboard is to be installed.

To install the beadboard panels, first start in a corner of the room and make a mark with a pencil at the top location of where you want to have the board to come to. Using a level and either a chalk line or pencil, make/draw a line the entire length of the wall at this height. You want to make sure that your line is level.

Next, place a section of trimmed panel up against the wall in the corner where you first made your mark. The trimmed panel should be cut to a height to allow it to be placed on the line and still have 1/8 to inch of clearance at the bottom. The gap at the bottom is necessary for thermal expansion of the panels.

When placing this first piece of trimmed panel up against the wall you will probably need to trim the edge of it to make it plumb with the wall. It is important that you do this to ensure that the vertical lines of the beadboard run perfectly perpendicular to the floor.

When securing the panel to the wall, leave about a 1/8th inch gap between the end of the panel and the corner to allow for thermal expansion. Likewise leave a 1/8th inch gap around doors and windows and cutouts for electrical outlets and switches.

To secure the beadboard panels to the wall, it is important to make sure you nail the panels to wall studs. Make sure you use finishing nails that are long enough to penetrate 3/4th of an inch to 1 inch into the wall studs.

The nails should be placed 6 to 8 inches apart along the edge of the panels and approximately inch in from the edge of the panel.

If you are installing the beadboard in an area where there is high moisture content you should use non-corrosive nails. Also, if you are installing it in a basement area a vapor barrier should be tacked on the wall first prior to installation.

After you have fully nailed the first panel in place, continue along the length of the wall installing the next panel. Make sure to fully nail each panel in place prior to moving on to the next panel.

Once you have completed the installation of the beadboard in the room, secure a cap rail to the top of the panels, and fasten baseboard trim to the bottom of them. In the corners attach corner molding.

Depending upon what type of finished look you want, either seal the beadboard paneling with a couple of coats of clear polyurethane or paint.

How to Choose the Perfect Power Shower For Your Bathroom

Choose the right power shower

Wake up to a great shower every day with our guide to the best shower for you

What is a power shower?

Power showers are mixer showers with an internal pump that increases the rate at which the water flows from the shower head.

Is a power shower suitable for my home?

A power shower can only be fitted to a gravity-fed, low-pressure system, usually found in older properties with a cold tank in the loft and a hot cylinder in the airing cupboard. Power showers aren't suitable if you have a combination boiler, or needed if you have a mains-fed, high pressure system.

What if I have a combination boiler?

As combination boilers heat mains-pressure water as soon as you turn the tap on, you should only need a standard mixer shower. If you want a stronger flow of water, an electric shower is a good option. This is connected to the mains supply and heats the water as it's needed, while an electric pump helps with the pressure- choose one with a high kilowatt rating to get a strong flow.

Are there any disadvantages to power showers?

They need high water volumes, so check how many litres per minute your shower delivers and make sure your water tank can cope - otherwise you run the risk of draining the system and creating an air lock. Your plumber will be able to assess this.

Does the integral pump make the power shower bulky?

Some can be concealed behind a wall with just a fixed shower head and the controls visible, so they can look very sleek. Exposed ones are easier to install and aren't too space hungry.

FEATURES TO LOOK OUT FOR

Thermostatic control:
Automatic adjustment to maintain a set temperature via the flow of the hot and cold water supplies. It will also maintain the temperature if someone turns a tap on or flushes the toilet while the shower is in use.

Eco-setting:
An option that saves water by reducing the power and using the systems natural gravity.

Easy-clean spray head:
Anti-limescale nozzles or rub-clean spray heads keep the water flow constant as they don't block up.

Choice of spray:
This gives you the option of a gentle spray for relaxation and an invigorating blast for a more stimulation shower.

Automatic shutdown:
This safety feature stops the water flow if the hot or cold supplies fail.

Height-adjustable shower-head:
Perfect if you and your partner are very different heights of if children will be using it.

Need to know
Due to the high pressure of power showers, a wet room or shower cubicle will contain the water better than a shower curtain or bath screen.

Make a Small Bathroom Feel Big

No matter where you live, chances are you wish you had a more spacious bathroom. When major renovation is not an option, how do you create more room in the same amount of space? By thinking creatively, and making use of a few visual tricks. Here are a few ideas to get you started in making a small bathroom feel larger.

Light colors in flooring, tile, wallpaper and paint will make the room feel more spacious and airy. Lighter colors reflect more light. By no means does this restrict you to an all white bath - lighter shades of your favorite color can still make a statement while keeping the room bright.

Good lighting is essential. Shadowy corners will make any room feel cramped or unkempt. There are many options to fit both your style and your budget. Recessed lighting can be installed at several points in the ceiling to banish shadows altogether, and does not take up counter or wall space. Wall sconces or even a small chandelier can add elegance. Check your existing fixtures - you may be able to improve the lighting in your bathroom simply by installing a brighter bulb.

Consider how far any element in the room protrudes. For example, replacing a vanity with a pedestal basin opens up floor space, visually broadening the room. Likewise, shelves, towel racks, and sconces that reach to far out make a room feel smaller and disrupts the space. Consider towel bars instead of shelves. Keep decorative accents close to the wall to allow as much free space as possible.

The thing that will have the most significant effect in making your bathroom seem more spacious is to strictly eliminate all clutter. If you don't need it in the bathroom, take it out, with the exception of a few decorative accents. Overcrowded shelves, cupboards, vanities and walls crowd a room. Look at each thing in the room and consider whether or not you use it, in that room, on a regular basis. If you don't, the item may have a better home elsewhere in the house. Remove beauty and hygiene supplies from the countertops, and find them a home elsewhere. If you don't have a cupboard, an attractive basket under the sink will hold your supplies, keeping them close at hand while reducing clutter.

Size matters! A large mirror will reflect light, and can trick the eye into expanding the space, while one or more small mirrors can crowd the wall. Likewise, a larger rather than smaller tile is a good choice in flooring, often making the area seem broader. Also consider downsizing your bathroom suite. Many bathtubs and showers are available in smaller sizes. A little extra floor space can go a long ways.

Bathroom Wall Paneling - A Fresh New Look

The room that is most often used in my house especially when company arrives is the basement. There is a large flat screen television, pool table and pin ball machines. It has one gigantically enormous flaw and that is the bathroom. Remember the bathroom is constantly visited by my guests. The privacy afforded there allows my guests to have close examination of the room. Keep in mind I have a beautiful vanity and wall mirror, but the problem is my walls. They are in disastrous condition. Parts are peeling and some of the tile is cracking. It gives the entire bathroom a drab and unappealing vision. I need a type of wall covering that will change the entire look and feel of the room.

I started searching for a fresh new look that would infuse my select tastes and personality while still remaining functional. I first started looking at all the different wall tiles available. I was unhappy with what I found since the tiles in my present room were cracking. I also wanted something that was easy to maintain. I had images of myself scrubbing the mould that had accumulated between the grout and the excising tiles.

There must be other options that I had not come across. To my delight there is an option which offers everything that I imagined. Through my search I had discovered waterproof bathroom wall paneling. It comes in a variety of designs, materials, styles and formats. It is quite easy to install there is no grouting needed and once installed you can use the room immediately. This paneling can be purchased as a complete kit. These panels come with all the necessary installation supplies. Some of the items included in these kits are side and back wall paneling, corner molding strips, corner soap dishes, adhesive caulk, pressure tape and accessories. Kits come cut to size so no trimming is necessary.

Bathroom wall paneling can be fitted over most walls. This includes brick, concrete, plaster board and ceramic tiles. It is a must that the walls are even and provide a suitable fixing for screws, plugs and adhesive. All are made by bonding a decorative high performance laminate to them. This makes the surface one hundred percent water proof. There are some panels that clip together tightly allowing no water through. This creates a seamless water tight joint.

The moist and humid conditions of the bathroom produce ideal atmosphere for mould and mildew to grow. The wall paneling solution has overcome this problem for all of us. We need never again to be bending over the walls scrubbing and almost passing out from the harsh odors of the detergents needed to get them clean. Wall paneling adds character to the room while protecting the walls from moisture.

These panels are made to withstand the rigorous demands of a busy household while maintaining its finish. It is very durable and is unlikely to suffer any damage. Also, after several years it will still look like new. You can use your typical cleaning products that you have around the house. You will not need to purchase anything special to keep its beauty.

You can find bathroom wall paneling in many different materials. I chose a PVC material with a mosaic tile effect. Another good choice would be bead boarding or wainscoting. This is excellent for the bathroom and runs vertically from the floor to one third or one half the height of the wall. This adds texture to the wall and makes it become the focal point of the room. This texture adds a rich vitality and vibrancy to the room.

In general when you add a new look or change the decor to a room it becomes a great mood enhancer. I know your bathroom may be small, but take a look around. It may be screaming for a design make over.

How to Fit a Shower

If you are looking to install a new shower in your home, the first steps will be to measure, prepare, and fit the shower. A shower kit will always come with installation instructions, which should be followed to get the best result. Here are a few basic, general guidelines that will help as well. As always when tackling any home improvement project, with or without professional help, ensure that all of your permits are in order before you begin. Shower fitting is not recommended for beginner do-it-yourselfers.

The base of any shower is the shower tray. The shower tray holds the water before it drains, keeping it from spilling out on to the floor. Make absolutely certain that the area is level and that the shower tray will be properly supported. Many shower trays are made of acrylic or resin that can be prone to flexing when not adequately supported. Too much flexing can lead to a break in the seal between the tray and the shower enclosure, causing a leak. Avoid this difficult and expensive problem from the start by taking steps to make sure you have the right kind of supports in the right places.

Make sure you have enough room underneath the shower tray for the drainage pipe to run. Measure carefully to ensure you have enough space for this. If you don't, build your shower floor to be a bit higher to allow the correct amount of space for the drainage pipe and waste trap. Make sure you have access to these things as you install the shower tray, so you can check the seals between the drain of your shower tray and your drain pipe before you close it up.

Before installing anything else, make sure that all walls to be included in the showering area have been well water-proofed. You may choose to use tile or a shower kit with plastic wall panels. Which ever route you choose to take, this is a vital step both in beautifying the shower as well as preventing water damage to your home.

The shower screens will be installed last. A good fit is made from accurate measurements! The type and size of the shower screen panels will depend on the size and shape of the shower tray you've purchased. They should fit together without gaps.

The shower screens, whether purchased separately or as part of a kit, will also have instructions from the manufacturer which should be followed for a solid and lasting result. Check all of your caulking and seals to ensure that everything is watertight.

Planning Your Bathroom Remodel Budget - Home Improvement Ideas

As a bathroom remodeling contractor, I get calls from people, that have no idea what they want or how much anything is going to cost. Here's some simple tips that can be very helpful when planning a bathroom remodel budget.

Bathroom Remodeling Investment

In 2008, the average mid-range bathroom cost around $16,000 and you could recoup around $12,000 of your original investment upon the sale of your home. According to a popular remodeling magazine, larger bathrooms using expensive fixtures, tile, bathtubs, woodworking, toilets and showers had an average of $52,000. Upon the sale of a home, you could recoup around $36,000 of your original investment.

Finding out How Much Things Cost

My first suggestion, would be to visit your local home improvement center, lumber yard or plumbing supply warehouse. Larger stores like Home Depot and Lowe's, seemed to provide you with value pricing but don't have a large selection. While doing some research on the Internet I noticed that some of their pricing is outrageously, outrageous. Some plumbing supply warehouses can provide value but beware others won't.

Create a List of Bathroom Remodeling Parts

You can get a good idea of your bathroom remodel costs for your budget by making a list of bathroom parts with pricing and then adding them up for a grand total. If you're a total bathroom remodel budget is $15,000 and you have a $6,000 bathtub with $4000 worth of tile, you could have a budget problem.

Figuring out the Labor

You will have to contact a contractor to get an actual cost for the labor. Sometimes you can double the cost of your bathroom remodeling parts to get a rough idea. If you have a list or a couple of lists and a few pictures of some sample bathrooms, this will make the contractor's job easier and often they can give you a labor price within a few days.

Give Yourself a Cushion

I would suggest leaving yourself a small financial cushion for any additional remodeling items. For example, you could see a different toilet, or instead of painting the walls, you now choose to wallpaper, you could incur additional expenses that you haven't planned for. If you know exactly what you want and stick to the original bathroom remodeling plan, you shouldn't need the cushion.

Financial problems often transfer into construction problems, so spend some time figuring out, how much money you want to spend on the bathroom remodel and try not to go overboard on the budget. I hate to see homeowners struggling with home improvement loan payments. Try to create a bathroom remodeling budget that is realistic and will not create a financial burden upon you or your family.

Solar Lights - An Easy Way to Outdoor Lighting

Solar lights are the safest and easiest kind of outdoor lights to install. Each fixture contains a scientifically designed solar collector panel that converts sunlight into electrical energy. The energy is stored in highly efficient rechargeable batteries which light the fixture at night.

There are some differences between solar lights and incandescent or fluorescent lights. Solar lights are equipped with LED's which stand for light emitting diodes. An LED is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when conducting current. Because of this, solar lights give off a different type of light than incandescent or fluorescent lights. You should not compare wattage in LED units versus incandescent and fluorescent lights. Wattage is a function of power consumption, not brightness. LEDs may not be as bright as a conventional incandescent or fluorescent light.

Solar lights are usually not as bright as other forms of outdoor landscape lighting. The benefit though is that they give off a softer, more subtle accent lighting that makes your outdoors look attractive in the dark.

An advantage of buying solar lights is that LED bulbs will never burn out during the lifetime of the product. Low voltage incandescent and fluorescent systems need bulb replacements often and add cost and inconvenience to the product.

The length of time that the lights stay on is dependent on the amount of sunlight received during the day. This will vary during the seasons and whether the part of the country gets inclement weather. With fully charged batteries, most solar lights stay lit for up to 10 or more hours.
One big advantage of solar lights is that they require no wiring and are very easy to install. Because they run on the sun's energy, they cost nothing to operate. They are environmentally friendly, and help us conserve our fast-depleting regular energy resources.

The only maintenance required for solar lights are occasional cleaning of the panel surface to keep it free of dust and dirt, regular battery checks, and replacing the batteries when required. The batteries are designed to withstand a minimum of 1000 deep discharges which is at least 1000 nights of light. They are readily available and easy to replace, rechargeable batteries.

The LED's in solar lights are not replaceable. However, their life expectancy typically exceeds 25 years, based on running 10 hours every night. With this durability, LED bulbs will never burn out during the lifetime of the product.

Jerome Sturgeleski started a website in May of 2005 when he decided to share his passion for enjoying his yard after hours. He thought that if his newly renovated landscaping project could be lighted after dark it would be enjoyable even in evening hours. How to Create a More Luxurious Master Bathroom

Your bathroom is your sanctuary, a place for you to escape from the children, the laundry, the dishes, or the guests that just won't seem to leave. Shouldn't you consider upgrading your home and spending a few hours dedicated toward bathroom remodeling? If there's little to no difference between the bathroom you use and the one the children use, then your bathroom is in definite need of a makeover. Follow these steps and you'll transform your boring bathroom in to a luxurious, spa-like getaway.

Color Says It All

Most bathrooms are adorned in blindingly white fixtures. From white tiled floors and walls, to too bright lights and even white cabinets and sinks, the word "sterile" comes to mind. Color sets the mood and feel of the room. A deep, richly colored paint such as a calming blue or green will give off a sense of relaxation and serenity, as opposed to the stark, harsh neutral white tones.

Soften It Up

Just as most bathrooms are decorated in white fixtures, so too are most bathrooms covered wall to wall in hard surfaces. To give off the feeling of "luxury", add soft touches. Plush area rugs and hang towels are ideal purchases to create a lavish feel.

Also, instead of typical white or neutral colored cabinet hardware, opt for a trendy marbled pattern that rivals even the priciest hotels in the nation.

Fancy Faucets & Fixtures

What's a fancy master bathroom without top-of-the-line tubs, faucets and showers? Upgrade your current tub with a jetted bath tub. For the ultimate relaxing soak, purchase a spa pillow. If you've got a standing-only shower, purchase a detachable showerhead.

Newer sink models offer electronic faucets; these high-tech fixtures will avoid overflow as well as diminish the amount of water wasted while you're brushing your teeth, or washing your hands. Additional sink models also feature designer ceramic, stone or marble vessel sinks. These sinks can be mounted above, partially above or even below the cabinet fixture.

Another way to transform your bathroom is by installing a new, advanced toilet. Some models come with automatic flush sensors, heated seats and lids, rear and front washing fixtures, air dryers and even deodorizers. When replacing or updating your toilet, also purchase new toilet paper holders in dark finishes to complete your bathroom's inviting look and feel.

Warm & Cozy

Many master bathrooms have cold hard-tiled floors. In addition to plush rugs, consider purchasing heated floor maps placed below your flooring to keep your toes toasty warm. These heated mats work with tile, stone, laminate and even wood surfaces. If this option seems a little too luxurious, consider purchasing heated towel bars instead. This way, you can enjoy the pre-heated towel immediately after soaking in the tub or shower.

Illuminate the Room

Any bathroom needs good light fixtures. Install new light fixtures above or to the sides of your vanity and mirror. This way, you'll reduce the amount of shadows on your face so you can properly apply makeup or shave your chin. Also, choose the right wattage of bulb. Avoid harsh overly strong bulbs as they may just look scary! By installing a light fixture with a dimmer switch, you can control how much you can or cannot see-and is ideal for setting a relaxing tone for a bath!

Cool Gadgets

Hotel master bathrooms feature nifty gadgets and tools that most homes do not have. Why not add these items to your bathroom as well? Fog-free mirrors are ideal for the on-the-go individual or family that needs to shower, dress and get ready quickly. Instead of airing out the bathroom or waiting for fog to clear, these fog-free mirrors eliminate waiting time, getting you out the door faster. Another bathroom gadget is a tooth brush sanitizing unit. These compact, decorative units eliminate germs and grim typically found on everyday toothbrushes.

Dangers Using Wood Stair Cleats - New Stair Construction

I would imagine most people don't even know what it wood stair cleat is, in construction we have so many words that describe the same thing. A stair cleat is another word for a thread bracket. In other words it's the part of the stairway that connects the stair stringer to the stair step. These have been used for years and over time, most of them will develop the same problem.

Most wood stair cleats loosened up and create a safety hazard. If the stairs are located outside in extreme weather conditions, for example, if it rains or snows a lot, extremely humid humid weather, or extremely hot and dry temperatures, your staircase might not last that long, if it is or isn't maintained properly. It's not a bad idea to use steel or concrete for stairways in these climates.

If you're ever walking up a set of stairs with wood cleats and the stair steps feel a little loose or wiggly, make sure you examined the stair cleats for safety. It's not uncommon for someone to be walking up or down a set of wood stairs and having the stair step or tread giveaway because the wood cleats has loosened.

If the wood stair cleats are nailed to the stair stringer, the nails can loosen up, causing it to become loose, as you walk up and down the stairs applying pressure to the stair cleat, this will create movement in between the stair step and the stair stringer. This could cause the cleat to crack, break and separate the connection between the stair step in the stair stringer.

I would suggest using metal brackets instead of wood cleats. The metal brackets will not crack or disintegrate like some wood cleats. Stair building brackets of course can loosen up and should be maintained regularly.

If you decide to use wood stair cleats, I would suggest using screws instead of nails and drilling holes in the wood stair cleats, most of the time this will prevent cracking the cleat. Try to use a thicker material for the stair cleat, for example using a 2 x 4 with lag screws and washers would be better than using a 1 x 4 with nails.

If you're walking up a set of stairs and a stair step feels loose, contact the owner of the property and let them know, they have a problem with their staircase.

Sauna Or Steam Bath Which Is Healthier?

A Sauna is a Finnish hot air bath. The word sauna is derived from the Finnish word for dry heat bath. The terms steam bath, steam shower and steam sauna often get confused with one another, yet they do not mean the same thing. The first difference begins with how they are heated.

The traditional sauna uses electric, wood or gas-fired heaters. The second type of sauna is the infrared sauna. The infrared sauna uses radiant heat which heats the occupants rather than the air. In the traditional sauna the air is heated but it is a dry heat. This is why the sauna is also called a dry hot-air bath.

In a steam bath it is moist heat. The steam bath uses a steam generator. The sauna has very low humidity, whereas the steam bath has high humidity. In a steam bath the steam builds up to create a humidity level of around 100%. Because of the humidity factor the heat in the sauna is far higher than that of the steam bath. The difference in temperature can be anywhere from 40C to 60C.

The health benefits of either depend upon what you want. Both steam baths and sauna are good to unwind and relax. They both help to cleanse by sweating. They are both good for blood circulation.

The dry heat of the sauna can make it uncomfortable for some people to breathe. Those with respiratory problems may prefer the moist heat of the steam bath. The inhalation of steam is often used for treating bronchitis and allergies. Therefore those who wish to treat respiratory problems will benefit more from steam baths.

A sauna detoxifies but it also refreshes and revitalizes your body. In general saunas are easier to build and require less material and labor than a steam bath. Both can be affordable and may add monetary value to your home.

Paul Hegarty is the owner of All-About-Saunas.com your guide to Saunas.

Structural Framing Beams

Let's start with the beams. They can be Glulam, Parallam, Microlam or even wood beams. What are all of these and why do I need them in my house. The beams are used to hold up parts of the house and are located in your walls, roofs and floors. Beams are used to transfer a load from one point to another.

Structural framing beams allow the architect to create large openings, floors and roofs in your house. The beams are also used to support the weight over the doors, windows and other openings in your home. These beams support massive amounts of weight in some cases and are even made of steel if needed.

Another growing problem is the lack of old growth trees in the forest. If we just used wood beams with out using the new engineered beams we would have to cut down a lot more of the bigger trees. So you can add these guys to your Christmas list. The lumber or wood engineers have come up with all sorts of alternatives for new building products. These new beams are just some of them. Keep up the good work guys...

Glulam is a engineered wood product comprised of wood laminations, or 2 x 4s that are bonded together with strong, waterproof adhesives. If you use a Glulam beam on the buildings exterior you will have to order a exterior Glulam beam. In this case the manufacture will use special exterior rated glues for the beam.

When ordering any wood engineered beams specify to the lumber yard what you are using the beam for. Exterior or Interior of the building. If you use a interior glulam over time there is a good chance of the beam delaminating or cracking apart.

Parallam is made from almost all of the wood on the log using veneer strands that are aligned parallel for maximum strength. The end product is a rectangular beam; which is longer, thicker, and stronger than solid-sawn lumber. They are often used as beams, headers, columns, and posts, among others uses.

Microllam is an engineered wood product that uses multiple layers of thin wood assembled with adhesives. It offers several advantages over typical milled lumber: it is stronger, straighter, and more uniform. It is much less likely than conventional lumber to warp, twist, bow, or shrink due to its composite nature. Made in a factory under controlled specifications, Microllam products allow users to reduce the onsite labor. They are typically used for headers, beams, rim board, and edge-forming material.

These beams come in all sorts of different lengths, widths and heights. They are engineered to hold amazing amounts of weight. They really are great engineering marvels.

Tip: I have had to replace almost all of these types of beams over the years due to some form of damage. Like anything else in your home if it is used improperly there is a good chance your are going to have some sort of failure. I have seen people add weight to these structural beams with no thought of them ever failing.

If you are planning on building a room addition, rebuilding your roof, adding a floor or any other type of construction where you are adding a addition load to your house. You might want to consult with a building contractor or structural engineer.

Some of the basic steps involved are
-Space planning & making efficient use of your existing space.
-Selecting a focal point of the room. Creation of overall color scheme.
-The placement of furniture that will complement the focal point
-Using lighting & light fixtures correctly.
-Choosing the right window treatments & incorporating the existing style & material.
-Addition of rugs, side tables, shopped from your own home. For example swapping side tables in your bedroom with the end tables, if it matches the style in your room redesign.
-Adding artwork and accessories by looking for pieces in your home like photographs and personal collections.
-Finally re-vitalizing the room by re-placing (not replacing) existing furniture, artwork accessories & complementing newly shopped items.

Creating Your Electricity

Creating your own electricity and generating your own power has always been one of my dreams. Having a self sufficient home, not only a house that takes care of itself by generating its own electricity through windmills or solar panels but the satisfaction knowing that no matter what happens to the electrical companies you will always have electricity at your home.

What a wonderful feeling it would be to get a check back from the utility company instead of paying them every single month. I don't know about you but my utility bills are ridiculous and seemed to be going up in price constantly. I can't believe all the fees they have been charging for years to all of their customers. If you add all the fees for every person in the city or county this comes to a large, a very large number and it's getting worse not better.

Generating your own electricity with solar or wind power is definitely green thinking. This is going to be the wave of the future as fuel used to create electricity continues to rise in price. I really can't imagine what the price of electricity is going to be like in 10 years as the mass consumption continues to rise in developing countries.

We have got to start taking care of our own needs through solar or wind power. We have got to start creating our own electricity to become self reliant. The more self reliant we become as a nation the less dependent we will be on major corporations, especially large power conglomerates.

Creating our own electricity can also be used for electrical cars that can be purchased in the future. Think of the money you will say in fuel costs as the price of gasoline continues to increase as well as less pollution into our environment.

This is definitely the wave of the future and common sense tells us this. I suggest you read this article again if you haven't figured out some of the problems coming our way in the future.

Think green and together we can start saving the planet.

While searching for new alternatives and trying to get some advice on creating your own electricity I came across a book you can purchase in digital format. This book seems to have quite a bit of information on creating your own electricity for a totally self sufficient home.

This book has been created in digital format to reduce the consumption of trees and the waste involved in creating a regular book. What a wonderful idea for helping our environment in quite a few ways.

Removing Interior Walls

Here's a word of advice for any contractor, Carpenter, handyman or homeowner that is planning to remove an interior wall from your home or someone else's. Beware of removing interior walls, to eliminate your fears of the house collapsing. Some of the interior walls inside of the house are important structural components of the building.

Some of these walls hold up floors, roofs and other loadbearing sections that could create safety problems within the structure of the house itself. This is an area where an expert with framing skills should be consulted. What is the definition of someone with excellent framing skills? Some one with at least 10 years as a master framing carpenter.

My home building experience consists of three decades for over 30 years of assembling some of the most difficult sections of a home. During these years I have seen damage done to houses from removing structural interior walls. Most of this damage could be repaired with a little structural engineering. Some of the damage could not be repaired and caused other damage to different sections of the house. The damage caused in some cases to the floor and the roof framing had to be completely rebuilt.

I'm not telling you about every single thing I have ran into but you would be surprised if I started to make a list of all the homeowners and professionals in the building industry or home selling and buying business that contacted me to remove a structural component of a building. There have even been a few of these people that told me everything was going to be okay just go ahead and remove the structural building component.

Needless to say I would leave these people very irritated but I'm sure they found someone to do the job. The bad news is I was normally the person they would hire to go back and repair the damaged building after these people were gone and out of business. There have been cases where people have removed an interior walls against my better judgment and over the years of driving by in these homes I personally got to witness the structural damage that was occurring on the outside of the house.

I have no idea what the inside of the house looked like but could only imagine. My advice again when removing interior walls is to hire an experienced contractor or at least get some advice from an experienced framing carpenter. This does not include your basic know it all that has basic construction experience like your father in law, parents, friends, golfing associates or people you work with that tell you not to worry about it, just do it, everything will work out just fine.

Tips in Remodeling a Small Bathroom - Carlsbad Home Remodeling

Being among the top players world-wide in the financial, commercial, entertainment and cultural industries, New York City has become the most densely populated city in the country. With such reputation, the cost of housing soars leaving smaller living spaces a more popular option. Making a home out of these amply-spaced to smaller units is a challenge to many. This includes making important features of the home seem much cozier such as remodeling a small bathroom.

When remodeling a small bathroom, a complete focus on space fused with the right amount of creativity is key to the success of the project. Another important thing to ponder on is that quality does not come cheap. But it does not mean that you would have to always stick with the most expensive service or product, it only means that you should take careful considerations before letting go of your hard-earned cash to be able to give the most value to the money that you spend.

There are various ways to make less space appear much bigger. Enlisted are helpful tips in remodeling a small bathroom:

First off, unless you have significant skills and experience in plumbing, carpentry and electrical works, or the project is not a major one; you should seek the expertise of a competent NYC contractor to help you. Following this first tip in remodeling a small bathroom would save you a whole of time and money in the long run.

Instead of having a tub, maximize the space by having a shower instead. Rather than the traditional shower pan construction, a simple one-piece pan would serve as a much sleeker option as well as a leakproof solution. But if you still prefer a tub over a spacious shower, then go for the soaking bathtubs that are smaller but deeper designs.

In remodeling a small bathroom, choose a lighter and cooler hue for the walls and delicate patters for wallpapers or tiles. Light colors have an airy feel to them creating an illusion of more space. To create a better impact out of these designs, install fixtures offering heavy lighting. Another way to better illuminate the small bathroom is through skylight features. A bay window is a good choice as its alcove may also offer additional storage space.

Two elements have long since been known to give an illusion of more space. Reflection
and vertical objects and designs such as unframed mirrors and tall bathroom products that have shiny surfaces can be used in remodeling a small bathroom. You can have two mirrors installed opposite each other or facing the window. And when shopping, choose a tall but compact model of toilet and either a wall-mounted or sleek sink.

Important considerations when remodeling a small bathroom are the storage of toiletries and room for decorative items. Choose to have spaces cut out into the walls to serves as additional storage or display area rather than having free-standing cabinets or shelves installed into the walls. Lesser things protruding from the walls would help make the space seem larger.

Eugene Makeev has been in the home improvement industry for a while. His skills and expertise, which have been polished through time, are now used to help New York home owners avoid the common pitfalls in home improvements by matching their needs with the right, prescreened NYC contractor. Finding Something You Don't Like About Yourself - Creating Habits

Finding something you don't like about yourself is usually very easy for most people. Most of the time you don't even have to ask your family or friends because you have heard them complain about the same thing for years. How many times have you heard someone mention, I need to lose weight?

Here's a list of things people don't like about themselves. If you're one of those people that has a hard time finding something wrong with yourself, you could always ask one of your friends for some suggestions. I'm sure they would like that.

1. The need to lose weight. This of course is one of the worst problems with Americans. Most people need to lose weight and let's not forget there are some people that need to gain weight.

2. The need to stop gambling. As more Indian reservations are allowed to build gambling casinos and of course as the Internet gambling gets larger, I've noticed some people with gambling problems.

3. The need to stop drinking alcohol. The abuse of alcohol has been going on for many years. These people have an excuse for why they drink and most of the time it doesn't make sense.

4. The need to stop smoking. This could be one of the most difficult things I've ever seen my friends and family deal with.

5. The need to stop excessive behaviors. For example, gossiping, cruelty, bullying, lying, cheating, stealing, partying etc. You get the idea.

6. Don't forget the dreaded shopaholic. Most shopaholic's seem to have large credit card debt and can't seem to stop this vicious circle of buying and owing money to their creditors.

7. Working long hours or the workaholic. Sometimes this is a necessity but I would suggest that you change your lifestyle if possible. Reevaluate your reasons for working so hard.

8. Religious fundamentalists. People that spend too much time at their place of worship and soon find themselves feeling guilty if they're not doing something spiritual.

9. The need to be on time. This would include people that have problems giving themselves enough time to get ready for work or school.

10. The need to stop doing drugs. I thought by now, approaching my 50s, that drugs would no longer be a problem in the United States, but it is. It's one of the most damaging things people can do to their lives.

There are plenty of things that people would like to stop doing or start doing. If you're a smoker and you seem to shop excessively near the casinos, I would advise you to start with something small and work your way up to the big stuff.

What are you going to change today about your life? Make a list of things that you're not happy with about your life and start making the changes today that you need to create the life you deserve and desire.

Clawfoot Bathtubs - Many Styles

The claw foot bathtubs made an appearance on the markets in 1883. The Process of enameling cast iron was developed by Standard Manufacturing. This led to the design of the cast iron claw foot bathtub. This is the tub we all think of with the rolled over rims. The company has become know as American Standard Brands. Still a major producer of not only bathtubs, which they still produce, but the plumbing business as a whole has benefited from the technologies and developments of American Standard Manufacturing. It has been stated that three out of five of the houses built in the United States has some type of their products in the house.

With basically four different types of claw foot bathtubs, this gives a wide variety to choose from. The classic claw foot tub is probably what most people think of first. This design has one end rounded so when a bather is in the tub his or her back can be rested in the curved portion while taking a nice long relaxing soaking. The end where the feet would be is more squared with faucets and a drain. The next design will be the slipper tub. This is very close to the classic except for the curved back is extended higher and can also be used more as a headrest also.

Then the double ended and the double slipper tub add to the choices of design of the bathtubs. Each of these tubs have two rounded ends. The slipper tub will be more of a "U" or banana shape. Both of the ends are raised so either end can be used or the tub may be shared with another bather. The rounded ends will require the faucet holes to be drilled in the side of the tub.

And just to make things a little more interesting all four of these designs can be purchased without the faucet holes drilled anywhere. And all of the designs could have the faucet holes drilled on the rolled rim. This may seem a little confusing at first, but when the antique claw foot tubs was designed, not all houses had running water. Then as the water supply was introduced to the houses, some would be from the wall or the floors. All the tubs can still be fit with which ever type of claw foot bathtub faucet you may need. The tub wall mount will fit the tubs that have faucet holes drilled in the tubs. The deck mounted will fit the design of the holes drilled in the rim, and will make the faucet look as if it is sitting on the rolled over edge. The free standing will allow for the water supply to come out of the floor. There is the bathroom wall mount for the water supply to come out of the wall, but in some situations, this one can also be used for the tub wall mount.

For a modern update on the vintage look of the claw foot tub, check into the acrylic claw foot bathtub. This technology has allowed for a lighter weight design, and the touch of the tub is warmer then the cast iron. But a whirlpool or the jet air can be installed and it is not unusual for either of these to have a remote control. Another great upgrade for either the cast iron or the acrylic is to install the claw foot shower tub. This is the shower, and the curtain rod that is usually hung from the ceiling, so you can still have a stand up shower if you like. This rod will require two or three regular shower curtains, but more good news. There is also a claw foot shower curtain that is quite a bit larger then a regular shower curtain, so you can enjoy the shower without worry of making a mess on the floor where the water goes out between the seams and the cold air will come in.

With the decision the either remodel are to built a new house, consider the use of the vintage style clawfoot bathtub The cast iron clawfoot bathtub bring a feel of warmth and will certainly become the focal point of the bathroom. If you want a modern, up to date performance from the tub, the acrylic clawfoot bathtub can come equipped with a remote controlled whirlpool or jet air.

Building Your Own House

Most of us only dream of building your own home and living in it for the rest of our lives, well maybe not for the rest of our lives. My grandfather built his home when my father was nine years old and lived in it until he died. As a Carpenter and general contractor, I have always wanted to build my own home but never got the chance.

For anyone interested in building the home of your dreams, I found a few books on home building that seemed to be pretty helpful. I have been remodeling, building room additions, worked on track house framing for years and have done more home repairs than you could possibly imagine. I have found some of these books to be very resourceful and helpful, when it comes to solving some of the problems I run into.

When it comes to building the foundation, it's not just about pouring a concrete slab or footings. You need to run electrical conduit, plumbing supply and waste pipes, make sure the building foundation is square and level, and if you forget one thing, just one thing, you could find yourself in a world of hurt. I have worked on homes where the builder forgot to install electrical conduit and plumbing for a kitchen island. The contractor needed to saw cut the foundation and repair at it, during the home construction. This cost the building contractor around $4600.

Sometimes a checklist makes sense but where you get a checklist for building homes. Well maybe one day, I will try to make one. These home building books have been valuable resources to me for many years and have saved me grief and agony over simple things that often get overlooked.

It's a little overwhelming to even think about building your own home, if you don't have some construction skills. Construction knowledge can be gained through on-the-job training and by reading construction manuals. The best of both worlds would be to have both of these skills.

Construction knowledge can be gained or improved, over time with experience, combined with a couple of great books.

Stair Stringer Fire Blocking

Moisture Against Gravity - Destroying Walls

Well I'm going to start this article with a little information on a job I did once.

I had been repairing a rental house for one particular homeowner for about three years when all of a sudden I got a phone call from him telling me the rental house was destroyed and he had never seen nothing like this. He sounded so upset over the phone I told him I would meet with him immediately.

On my way to the house I was trying to get an idea in my head what the house was going to actually look like. Since I have been repairing rental properties for over 20 years at this point of my career, nothing really shocked me. I had pretty much seen everything that could possibly be done to rental property by the tenants that lived there. There is a lot to be said about taking care of it as if it were your own.

He was waiting for me at the front door and he looked thoroughly disgusted. As I approached him he was shaking his head and yelling at the same time can you believe these people, can you believe what they did to my house. I was expecting to see the front door ripped off and all the windows broken out of the house but this wasn't the case.

As he led me through the home and I could see the usual clothing on the floor, broken cabinets, a few holes in the walls and of course that awful smell of mold and mildew. All of this stuff was nothing new to me because I'm the guy they call to fix it when a renter moves out of the property.

As I entered one of the bedrooms I got my first glimpse of something I had never seen before but heard stories about and could not believe my eyes. Looking at the walls in the bedroom about 3 feet from the floor all the way around the room, the plaster was soft. It actually looks like someone shoved popcorn into the wall somehow.

The homeowner wasn't even looking at this because of the rest of the damage in the home. I started to explain to him I'd never seen nothing like this but I could guess it was water damage somehow since the plaster was soft. I could actually stick my finger into the wall, that's how soft the plaster was.

My first thought was to examine the carpeting a little closer to see if it was wet. Well it was damp but it wasn't as wet as I would've expected it to be with the amount of water in the walls. With a little more home inspecting I had found the culprit, it was a broken water bed. The water bed was now in the backyard looking innocent.

I couldn't believe a broken water bed could do this much damage so I looked around for broken or leaking water pipes and could not find any. The other bad news I had to inform the homeowner was that the water had damage the bathroom and closet walls also. These walls of course were on the other side of the bathroom walls that were damaged.

Well the point of this story is that water will actually wick its way up or worked its way up into a wall. I had to remove 4 feet of drywall all the way around the room. The plaster or drywall actually acts like a sponge pulling the water into the walls. Hard to imagine that gravity in this case seems to reverse. I would've never thought that water would've traveled so far up the walls creating that much damage.

To repair the rental property I had to remove the damaged drywall, remove the carpeting, dry the wood framing out and put the whole thing back together.

I'm still amazed and will remember that project for as long as I live.
